Sweet red cherries and tart green apples loaded the trees,
waiting to be picked and turned into delicious warm pies baked
by Grandma.
Baking was probably Genny’s favorite thing to do with her
grandmother. Grandma Effie was a wonderful baker. She
taught Genny how to wash, pare and cut the apples. Genny also
learned to pit the bright red cherries and then heap them into a
flaky brown pastry crust. A delicious aroma filled the kitchen as
the pies sat cooling on the counter.
On other days, there were deep purple Concord grapes to be
cleaned, cooked and put into big glass jelly jars. The yummy
grape jam would be enjoyed when fruit wasn’t so plentiful.
